Multimedia Information Systems

The Multimedia Information Systems research group deals with the support of structured and unstructured data in information systems as well as the search and linking of such data. The particular focus is on the management of relational, textual and geographical data.

Today, modern information systems not only manage classic structured data, but also increasingly unstructured data, such as texts. It is precisely this approach that enables information systems to manage almost all of an organization’s information, providing users with an up-to-date and comprehensive digital picture of a complex situation. The prerequisite for such a comprehensive picture is the analysis of correlations and the derivation of precise forecasts. Today, the corresponding technologies are summarized under terms such as big data analytics and smart data. They form the basis for digitalization applications in areas such as Industry 4.0, health and mobility.

One focus of the “Multimedia Information Systems” research group is on applications in the field of digital mobility. Current projects in this area include the BMDV-funded project “Optimization of intermodal transport in rural areas – OptiModal” and the StMWi-funded project “Rural Remote Operated Land Vehicle – ROLAND”. In the area of Industry 4.0, the research group is carrying out the StMWi-funded project “KIGlas – Optimization of glass production using artificial intelligence methods”. For these projects, the research group focuses on the integration, management and analysis of large heterogeneous data volumes.
